Recreational Therapist - Psychiatric Unit - Full Time - Days at Mohawk Valley Health System summary:

The Recreational Therapist in the Psychiatric Unit designs and implements therapeutic recreation programs aimed at improving patients' physical, social, and emotional well-being. They assess individual needs and interests, develop treatment plans, and lead various recreational activities while monitoring patient progress. Collaborating with healthcare professionals, they ensure that rehabilitation efforts are tailored to meet each patient's unique situation and preferences.

Job Summary

Under the direction of the Director of Nursing or designee, the Recreational Therapist will engage patients in therapeutic activities. Recreational therapists will plan, direct, and coordinate recreation-based medical treatment programs to help maintain or improve patients' physical, social, and emotional well-being.

Core Job Responsibilities

• Organize therapy sessions to interact with patients and offer recommendations for physical and mental wellness

• Develop and implement rehabilitation programs to help patients adjust to a disability or illness

• Ensure treatment plans are suitable for patients’ physical condition and are in accordance with their preferences

• Monitor and keep track of patient’s progress to modify treatment program as necessary

• Obtain and review patient’s medical records to assess patients abilities, interests, and needs

• Provide health tips to patients and their families on leisure activities and lifestyle changes necessary for improved health conditions

• Organize and lead patients in recreational activities such as art, sports, music or dance

• Liaise with other health care professionals to plan and evaluate therapy programs

• Help patients develop skills useful in participating in leisure exercises

• Maintain accurate record of patient information, treatment program and recovery progress

• Prepare and present reports to treatment team to highlight patients response to therapy

• Perform other duties as required.

Education/Experience Requirements

Required:

• Completed a bachelor’s degree (an associate degree may be accepted depending on work experience)

• 1-5 years of work experience (depending on level of education) 

Licensure/Certification Requirements

Required:

• Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS).
