Job Description

Position Summary The Home and Hospital Instruction Program (HHIP) oversees eligibility procedures and instruction resources for students who are unable to access classroom instruction as a result of a diagnosed medical or psychiatric condition. As a Citywide Home, Hospital and Treatment Center Teacher, you will provide instruction in the home setting, in small groups or individually at bedside in an array of hospitals and treatment centers located throughout the city of Chicago. The candidate must be creative and flexible regarding site location, work hours, travel, parking, and delivery settings as caseloads are modified based on the daily census at the hospital and requests for homebound services submitted at the school level. The selected teacher will maintain direct contact on a regular basis with medically challenged students and must evidence, or be willing to obtain, required immunizations prior to hiring. Many of the students on the Citywide Home, Hospital and Treatment Center Teachers' caseload are critically ill and require a teacher with the ability to remain focused on academics while being sensitive to the life threatening conditions such as inoperable brain tumors or devastating side effects of chemotherapy and motor and cognitive issues secondary to traumatic brain injury. Some students receive instruction at bedside in the hospital and may be connected to a variety of tubes, lines and other medical equipment. Other students may present with behavior and emotional disorders including explosive episodes of anger, severe depression, irrational mood swings, bipolarism and schizophrenia. Instruction provided to this population of students is facilitated in residential treatment centers where they are continuously supervised and monitored. Finally, some students will require remote or in-person instruction in their home setting as a result of a medical or psychiatric diagnosis that impedes their ability to attend school to participate in a full day of classroom instruction. Principal Accountability Instruction and Support:

  • Provide instruction, in person or remote, to students in the required settings (e.g. home, hospital and/or treatment center)
  • Provide appropriate instruction by planning lessons and assignments in collaboration with the student's classroom teacher(s)
  • Participate in education planning meetings facilitated by staff at the student's school of enrollment
  • Integrate evidence based instructional strategies that infuse technology, art, and music in instruction
  • Use data to inform and differentiate instruction
  • Collaborate weekly with student's teachers, at their school of enrollment, regarding instruction, assignments, and measurable progress
  • Improve student achievement outcomes and engage students in the learning process by presenting learning activities in multiple formats
  • Manage student records and create detailed student reports on a frequent basis •Possess dynamic presentation skills
Technology Skills •Proficient PC skills: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Google Mail, Google Suite and Access as related to instruction of general education and special education students •Knowledge and use of the CPS Student Information System (e.g. Aspen, SSM, etc.) •Use most current technological devices (e.g. iPad, Android tablet, etc.) to support instruction Qualifications Type of Education Required:
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in Education, Special Education, or a related field of study
  • Professional Educator Licensure Teaching Endorsements (Learning Behavior Specialist I)
Type of Education Preferred: •Professional Educator Licensure Teaching Endorsements (K-21/Approved Program) Type of Teaching Experience and Number of Years Preferred: Minimum four (4) years of teaching experience in elementary and high school setting Residency Requirement: As a condition of employment with the Chicago Public Schools (CPS), employees are required to live within the geographic boundaries of the City of Chicago within six months of their CPS hire date and must maintain residency throughout their employment with the district.
